Ablaze Publishing, on Tuesday, unveiled its forthcoming comic series, “Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac – Time Odyssey,” with the initial issue scheduled for release on Wednesday. The narrative is crafted by French artist Jérôme Alquié (known for “Space Pirate Captain Harlock”) and Arnaud Dollen (of “Surnaturels”), with Alquié also handling the artwork.
The plot revolves around the goddess Athena and her valorous knights, led by the renowned Seiya, who are summoned once more when Chronos, the deity of time, aspires to join the pantheon of Olympian gods. His audacious plan involves the creation of a Doomsday Clock, capable of altering the course of history, endangering both the knights and the fate of Earth.
The series will showcase diverse variant covers contributed by industry luminaries such as Gerald Parel, Jon Lam, Creees Lee, Ramon Perez, and others. The comic initially made its debut in Akita Shoten’s Champion RED in July 2022, subsequently hitting the French market in September of the same year.
Masami Kurumada, the creator of the original Saint Seiya manga published between 1986 and 1990, has had a profound influence on the franchise. His work has led to numerous television anime adaptations, original video anime projects, anime films, and spinoff manga. The original series, boasting 35 million copies in circulation, has earned a special place in the hearts of fans. The Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō spinoff manga has also been adapted into an anime.
Viz Media released the original manga in English, titled “Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac.” ADV Films initially presented Toei Animation’s anime adaptation with an English dub, first as “Knights of the Zodiac” and later as “Saint Seiya.” The series was eventually released unedited under the title “Saint Seiya” by New Video Group on DVD.
In July 2022, Crunchyroll commenced streaming the second season of the CG anime remake, “Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac – Battle for Sanctuary.” The first part, comprising the initial six episodes, had its worldwide debut in July 2019. This anime’s first 12-episode season delves into the Galaxian Wars to Silver Saints story arcs from the manga, with a confirmed third season on the horizon.
Kurumada’s manga franchise extended its reach to Hollywood with the release of the live-action film “Knights of the Zodiac.” The film made its U.S. debut on May 12, garnering an estimated box office earnings of US$535,000 and securing the 11th spot in its opening weekend.
