Animation Art Director Shichirō Kobayashi Passes Away at 89

Animation art director Shichiro Kobayashi passed away on August 25th due to congestive heart failure. he was 89 years old. After graduating from Musashino Art University, Kobayashi joined Toei Animation in 1964 after working as an art teacher at an elementary school. 

In 1968 he founded Kobayashi Productions. He has worked as an art director on works such as “Gutsy Frog”, “Gamba no Boken”, “Original Genius Bakabon”, “Tomorrow’s Joe 2”, “Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro”, “Urusei Yatsura 2”, and “Nodame Cantabile”. 

In 1986, he won the Japan Animation Award for Best Art Direction, the Tokyo International Anime Fair Achievement Award in 2009, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs Film Achievement Award in 2011.
