AnimEigo Plans Macross II BD Release Next Summer Following Kickstarter Campaign

(Last Updated On: July 30, 2023)

At their Otakon panel, AnimEigo’s founder, Robert Woodhead, excitingly revealed their plans to release the Blu-ray Disc edition of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again OVA next summer. Anticipating the release, they will launch a Kickstarter campaign at the end of August, offering a limited edition. The campaign’s public preview will be announced soon.

The region-free release will comprise all six episodes of the video series in BD-50 format, featuring AnimEigo’s standard options of multi-color subtitles, both for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and monochrome subtitles.

Among the confirmed bonus extras are clean opening and ending credits, an on-disc art gallery with 300+ slides of color and line art, a six-panel printed insert with a poster on one side and the backer list on the other, and a reversible cover slip with traditional and “graphics-heavy” sides.

Kickstarter Campaign

AnimEigo is also striving to include two Japanese commentary tracks featuring the production staff and voice cast, along with a liner notes booklet containing interviews with key staff members.

Thanks to the extensive archive of production materials provided by Macross copyright holder Bigwest, AnimEigo is likely to offer a larger 8.5×11-inch artbook to Premium Set buyers, possibly containing over 200 pages. If the print run exceeds 1,500 copies, the artbook will be upgraded from softcover to hardcover.

In a refreshing approach, the Kickstarter campaign introduces a flexible stretch goal menu system, allowing backers to allocate “Stretch Bucks” among various bonus extras after the campaign ends. The initial stretch goals include new Mikimoto art for the packaging and artbook cover, a big art poster, and additional audio commentaries (with input from backers). AnimEigo is also keen to hear suggestions from backers, as previous campaigns have led to incorporating their ideas into bonus extras.

While the Macross II license covers the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, AnimEigo will ship pre-orders worldwide, except to Japan and China. As always, shipping options, charges, and stretch goals are subject to change during the campaign.
