On Monday, Ascendent Animation made an exciting announcement about producing an English dub for Seduced By My Best Friend (Fucked by My Best Friend), the TV anime adaptation of Yupopo Orishima’s manga, Kuro-Gyaru ni Natta Kara Shinyū to Yatte Mita. The anime premiered in April 2021 on Tokyo MX and the BS11 channel.
This “gender-swap romantic comedy” revolves around college friends Shion Chihara and Rui Chihaya, known for their unmatched skills in wooing women. However, when Shion accidentally takes a mysterious drug, they wake up in a woman’s body, leading to unexpected romantic complications as Rui falls in love with the transformed Shion, unaware of their true identity.
Kevin Frane has been chosen to direct the English dub, while Steve Warky Nunez will handle audio engineering and mixing. Elsie Lovelock joins as the assistant director, K. Cornell Kellum as the executive producer, and Reece Bridger will be responsible for talent sourcing.
The anime was directed by Chokkō at the renowned studio Irawiazu, with Eeyo Kurosaki and Rei Ishikura as the scriptwriters. McQ1 designed the characters and served as the chief animation director, and Ayako Misawa directed the sound at BlackFlag. The art direction was handled by Namiko Hanayashiki and Tamako Noyama, with Hikaru Mitaka as the compositing director of photography and Kо̄ki Shinkai as the editor. The project was presented by Suiseisha, the publisher of the manga.
The manga, initially serialized digitally, has been published in print by Suiseisha. In English, it has been released under the title F***ed by My Best Friend through the Coolmic service. The manga’s title, Kuro-Gyaru ni Natta Kara Shinyū to Yatte Mita, refers to the fusion of the ganguro gyaru fashion trend, characterized by a dark tan, with the gyaru subculture popularized in 1990s Japan. The provocative nature of the manga is evident in its literal translation on the book cover as “Black Gal” with an explicit word.
The anime is part of the long-running “AnimeFesta” series, which has been streaming and airing since April 2017. AnimeFesta, previously known as Anime Zone and ComicFesta Anime, has produced short anime adaptations of over 25 manga from ComicFesta in the past six years. Many of these manga explore adult or risque themes. Fans often refer to AnimeFesta anime as “Sōryo-waku” due to the influence of their initial series, On a Lustful Night Mingling with a Priest (Sōryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni…). Typically, the anime series have two versions: a “broadcast” version, censored for television, and a “premium” uncensored version available online. WWWave Corporation releases many of these anime titles in English on its Coolmic website.
The latest addition to the AnimeFesta lineup is Fūfu Kōkan: Modorenai Yoru, the TV anime adaptation of Peter Mitsuru’s adult manga, Fūfu Kōkan: Otto Yori Sugoi Kongai Sex (Marriage Exchange: Amazing Extramarital Sex Compared to My Husband). The anime premiered on the AnimeFesta website in mid-June before airing on Tokyo MX and BS11 on July 2.
