The novels, brought to life by the captivating illustrations of Touko Shino, are published in Japan by Shufunotomo via their Hero Bunko imprint. English-speaking fans can delve into Maomao’s world too, thanks to the English translation of the series available from J-Novel Club.

‘The Apothecary Diaries’ anime adaptation is helmed by director Norihiro Naganuma, renowned for his work on ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’. Naganuma’s skill is complemented by assistant director Akinori Fudesaka, creating a highly anticipated combination of talent for the forthcoming series.

The series whisks viewers to the East, where an Emperor’s consorts and maids reside in the vast complex known as the hougong, or rear palace. In this grand backdrop, the plot revolves around Maomao, a clever yet unassuming girl, who is forced into palace service after a childhood spent in a humble town under her apothecary father’s tutelage.

Despite her ordinary appearance, Maomao possesses an astute mind and extensive medicinal knowledge. Her intellect attracts the attention of Jinshi, the observant head eunuch, who assigns her the risky job of a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favored consort to test her food for poison. The series follows Maomao as she navigates through palace intrigues and mysteries, with her unique deductive skills and insatiable curiosity often plunging her into unexpected adventures—and dangers.

‘The Apothecary Diaries’ is poised to present an intriguing blend of historical backdrop and suspenseful storyline, all seen through the eyes of its fascinating heroine, Maomao. The anime promises to deliver a thrilling ride when it airs in 2023.
