Not everyone is cut out for the flamboyant, attention-grabbing hero or the devious, mustache-twirling villain who commands attention. Instead, some excel in the shadows, manipulating society with their wit and cunning. This is the role Cid aspires to when he is mysteriously transported to another world. With his adept storytelling skills, Cid emerges as the unexpected leader of the covert Shadow Garden organization, opposing a menacing cult (which he had completely fabricated). However, there’s an unforeseen twist that even his vivid imagination failed to anticipate: the cult he conjured up actually exists, and they are infuriated that his power trip has disrupted their wicked agenda!

Kazuya Nakanishi, known for his work as the chief animation director on Darwin’s Game, takes the helm as the director for the upcoming anime at Nexus, which previously worked on projects like Darwin’s Game and Granbelm. Makoto Iino, acclaimed for adapting Tōzai’s original character designs for animation in series such as Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town and Demon Lord, Retry!, brings their artistic prowess to breathe life into the characters. Kanichi Katou, recognized for his involvement in successful shows like Black Clover and Those Snow White Notes, lends his expertise in overseeing the series scripts. Complementing the talented team, Kenichiro Suehiro crafts the mesmerizing musical score.
Yen Press has acquired the licenses for both the light novels and the manga adaptation of the series. The story, initially serialized by Aizawa on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in May 2018, was later published by Kadokawa as physical volumes with artwork by Tōzai. The first volume hit the shelves in November 2018. In December of the same year, Anri Sakano began the manga adaptation, which was featured in Kadokawa’s Comp Ace magazine. Additionally, a spinoff manga titled Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! Shadow Gaiden (The Eminence in Shadow – Shadow Side Story) was launched in Comp Ace in July 2019 by Seta U.
