On Tuesday, the poker-themed anime, High Card, delighted fans by unveiling the first promotional video, as well as announcing the cast and staff for its highly anticipated second season. Excitingly, the new season is scheduled for a January 2024 premiere. Adding to the project’s appeal, a stage play is also in the works, set to debut in January 2024.

Furthermore, a fresh addition to the High Card universe comes in the form of a serialized novel, HIGH CARD–♧3Green Green&♡5Calories High, which is set to be featured in Monthly Newtype magazine starting from September 8.

The story revolves around Finn, who, upon learning of his orphanage’s impending closure due to financial woes, embarks on a daring quest to make a fortune at a casino. However, fate has much more in store for Finn than he could have ever imagined. A mysterious encounter with a card-wielding man triggers a chain of events, revealing the existence of 52 X-Playing cards that grant extraordinary powers to their holders. These cards unlock the hidden potential of one’s “buddy,” leading to a chaotic power struggle.
At the heart of this tumultuous tale lies the enigmatic group known as High Card, who have been tasked by the king of Fourland to collect these powerful cards scattered across the kingdom, all while posing as employees of the luxury car maker Pinochle. Now, Finn finds himself becoming the group’s fifth member, joining them on a treacherous mission to locate these cards.

In their path stand formidable adversaries like Who’s Who, a rival car maker hell-bent on defeating Pinochle, and the infamous Mafia family, the Klondikes. Justice, desire, and revenge fuel the relentless battle among these card-obsessed players, promising a high-stakes showdown!
The opening theme “Trickster,” performed by the band FIVE NEW OLD, sets the stage for the thrilling anime, while Meychan’s soulful rendition of “Squad!” serves as the captivating ending theme. This multi-dimensional project, helmed by Kadokawa, TMS Entertainment, and Sammy Corporation, showcases an intricate poker-themed narrative encompassing anime, manga, and novels.
The Manga UP! service launched the “High Card -♢9 No Mercy” manga in August 2022, beautifully illustrated by the project’s original character designer, Ebimo. Concurrently, the “High Card -♢7 Never No Dollars” novel began serialization in the esteemed Monthly Newtype magazine that same month, adding depth to the captivating universe.
