The story revolves around Shiro Kaieda, who is entrusted with the captaincy of Japan’s groundbreaking nuclear submarine, developed jointly by Japan and the United States under utmost secrecy. However, in this gripping narrative, he and his 76 crew members deviate from their mission, delving into the complexities of nuclear warfare, international politics, and the pursuit of world peace.

Kawaguchi’s manga had a successful run from 1988 to 1996 in Kodansha’s Morning magazine, captivating readers with its enthralling storyline. It later served as the inspiration for Sunrise’s anime special in 1996, followed by a two-part original video anime from 1997 to 1998. The anime, initially released on videotape by Central Park Media and later on DVD, garnered significant attention.

In December 2019, Kawaguchi concluded his collaboration with journalist Osamu Eya on the compelling manga titled Kūbo Ibuki (Aircraft Carrier Ibuki), a series that began in 2014, offering readers a unique perspective.

Separately, in November 2017, Kawaguchi wrapped up his engaging manga titled Zipang: Shinsō Kairyū, unrelated to his earlier time-traveling war manga Zipang, which captivated readers in Kodansha’s Morning magazine until 2009.

Central Park Media took charge of releasing the naval anime special The Silent Service, which drew inspiration from Kawaguchi’s manga. Additionally, Geneon Entertainment (USA) released the Zipang television anime, adding to the franchise’s popularity.

Most recently, in 2021, Kawaguchi and Shinji Makari concluded their joint venture titled Sagara S no Dōsotai (Sagara The S Allotrope), a manga that debuted in Morning Magazine in 2018, captivating readers with its compelling narrative.
