Jio TV Added English subtitles to Animax Asia channel

(Last Updated On: February 20, 2023)

Jio TV, a streaming platform by Relience, has announced that it is now broadcasting Animax Asia with English subtitles. Viewers can access the channel on channel 444 of the Jio TV set-top-box and mobile application for linear streaming. The addition of Animax Asia comes after Sony Pictures Entertainment removed the channel from its Sony LIV application in May 2020, without making an official announcement.

The acquisition of Animax Asia, along with three other pay-TV channels, by KC Global Media was announced in the same week that Sony Pictures Entertainment removed the channel from its Sony LIV application. In January 2021, it was reported that former Sony Pictures Television executives, Andy Kaplan and George Chien, had reached an agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the acquisition of Animax Asia and two other entertainment networks in Southeast Asia and South Korea.

Animax India, the Indian division of Animax Asia, was previously broadcast on cable and DTH television from July 2004 to April 2017. The channel underwent several changes during its time on air, including the decision to broadcast its entire programming in English from August 2006 onwards. In 2012, Animax India was taken off of DTH services, and in April 2017, Sony Pictures Entertainment replaced the channel with Sony Yay, simultaneously streaming Animax Asia on the Sony LIV app.

The addition of Animax Asia to Jio TV’s platform provides Indian viewers with access to a variety of anime programming with English subtitles. This move is likely to be well-received by anime enthusiasts in India, who have limited options for legally streaming anime content in the country. With the popularity of anime on the rise globally, this could also be a sign of streaming platforms recognizing the potential of the genre in India’s rapidly growing streaming market.
