Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Marks 80 Million Copies with Special Live-Action Video

(Last Updated On: June 29, 2023)

Shueisha, the esteemed Japanese publisher, revealed today that Gege Akutami’s acclaimed manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, will cross a significant landmark with its 23rd volume set for release on July 4. The manga series is set to have a staggering 80 million copies in circulation, encapsulating both print and digital formats. While this figure doesn’t reflect the number of copies sold, it’s nonetheless a monumental achievement for the franchise.

To commemorate this milestone, Shueisha has announced the launch of a special live-action video. The video will premiere on Japanese broadcasters MBS and TBS on July 5, during the commercial segments of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime film broadcast. The franchise is planning a comprehensive outreach, with an extended version of the video also being released on the official Jujutsu Kaisen Twitter account and the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine’s YouTube channel.

Tracing the manga’s journey, it’s evident that Jujutsu Kaisen has experienced a significant surge in popularity. The number of circulating copies went from 8.5 million in early October 2020 to a whopping 80 million in July 2023. The series’ growth has been nothing short of meteoric.

Jujutsu Kaisen was first introduced to readers in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018. Viz Media, recognizing the potential of the series, simultaneously published the manga’s initial three chapters in English as part of its Jump Start initiative.

Transitioning to its new Shonen Jump model in December 2018, Viz continued to digitally publish new chapters of the manga. Shueisha also supports digital distribution through its MANGA Plus service.

The manga’s success propelled its adaptation into a 24-episode anime series, which premiered in October 2020. An anime film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, based on Akutami’s manga prequel story, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, was released in December 2021.

Fans have more to look forward to, as the second season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime is slated to premiere on July 6, promising more exciting developments in this engaging franchise.
