Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine revealed in its September issue that the original mahjong anime “Pon no Michi” (The Way of Pon) will soon be adapted into a manga by Tsukasa Unohana (Anima Yell!). The eagerly anticipated manga is scheduled to debut in the magazine’s upcoming issue on September 1.
Excitement continues to build as the anime is slated for a grand premiere in January 2024.

Set in the picturesque Onomichi City of Hiroshima Prefecture, the story follows Nashiko Jippensha, a high school student who faces homelessness after being kicked out of her home. However, fate leads her to discover her father’s abandoned mahjong parlor. Determined to create a haven for her friends, Nashiko renovates the parlor into a cozy spot where they can have a blast, indulge in culinary delights, sip tea, and indulge in occasional games of mahjong.
The anime’s main cast includes:
- Yui Kondou as Riche Hayashi
- Iori Saeki as Pai Kawahigashi
- Shion Wakayama as Izumi Tokutomi
- Kaori Maeda as Nashiko Jippensha
IIS-P is acknowledged for the original tale. Tatsuma Minamikawa (Fire Force, Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry) helms the anime, both directing and scripting, at OLM.
Drafting the original character designs is Negi Haruba (The Quintessential Quintuplets’ original creator), with Kenji Ōta (key animation, Pokémon XY) adapting them for animation.
In Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Carat magazine, Unohana launched the Anima Yell! four-panel manga in February 2016. The manga concluded in August 2020, and its fifth and final compiled book volume was published in September 2020.
Doga Kobo brought the manga to life through a television anime that premiered in October 2018. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan.
Beforehand, Unohana penned the Hajiotsu, D.C. II Imaginary Future, and Tenbin wa Hana to Asobu manga.

Recently, Unohana initiated the Gokigenyō, Ikkyoku Ikaga? (Good Day to You, How About a Game?) manga in Manga Time Kirara Carat in June 2022. Houbunsha released the first compiled book volume of the manga on April 27.
