The “Toonami on the Green” event at Comic-Con International showcased the much-anticipated trailer for “Lazarus” (known as “Lazaro” in Japanese), a thrilling original anime produced for Toonami. The brilliant minds behind this project are none other than Shinichiro Watanabe, renowned for his work on anime classics like “Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo,” and “Space Dandy,” and the esteemed animation studio MAPPA, known for hits such as “Chainsaw Man,” “Jujutsu Kaisen,” and “Attack on Titan The Final Season.”
During the event, the esteemed director Shinichiro Watanabe personally appeared and treated the audience to an exclusive preview of the fascinating character designs and stunning imageboard art from the upcoming anime. The production team aims to complete “Lazarus” by 2024, but they have yet to confirm a specific release window.
Excitingly, Shinichiro Watanabe is taking the helm as the director for every episode, promising an exceptional viewing experience. Adding to the anime’s action-packed sequences is the involvement of Chad Stahelski, the mastermind behind the exhilarating stunts in the “John Wick” films.
To enhance the series further, the anime will feature a captivating score composed by the renowned jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, with additional contributions from acclaimed producers, DJs, and musicians Floating Points and Bonobo. Behind the scenes, Sola Entertainment is skillfully producing this ambitious project.
The story of “Lazarus” unfolds in the year 2052, an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity. Humanity believes they have attained ultimate freedom from sickness and pain, thanks to the miraculous drug Hapuna, created by Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner. However, when Dr. Skinner suddenly disappears after Hapuna’s introduction, a grim revelation emerges three years later – the drug has a short half-life, and everyone who has taken it is doomed to die. A world once filled with hope now faces a sinister fate, as death looms large.
In a race against time, a special task force known as “Lazarus” is assembled from across the globe, with the sole mission of saving humanity from Dr. Skinner’s catastrophic plan. Can this diverse group of five agents find the elusive Skinner and develop a life-saving vaccine before the impending doom becomes a reality?
Shinichiro Watanabe’s exceptional directorial skills have graced numerous anime masterpieces, including “Cowboy Bebop,” “Macross Plus,” and “Samurai Champloo,” among others. His previous works, such as the “Blade Runner: Black Out 2022” anime short and “A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot” screened at the 26th Fantasia International Film Festival, have garnered critical acclaim, leaving fans eager for what promises to be another extraordinary addition to his impressive portfolio.
