The official website for the original mahjong-themed anime “Pon no Michi” (The Way of Pon) has unveiled a second key visual and a character promotional video for Nashiko. This eagerly awaited anime is scheduled to debut in January 2024 as part of the “Animeism” programming block on TBS, MBS, and BS-TBS.
The story unfolds in Onomichi City, located in Hiroshima Prefecture, where Nashiko Jippensha, a high school student, finds herself unexpectedly homeless.
Struggling to find a place to hang out with her friends, Nashiko stumbles upon her father’s abandoned mahjong parlor. Determined to revive it, she transforms the parlor into a cozy haven for her and her friends, a place where they can enjoy cooking, tea, and occasional rounds of mahjong.
The original story is credited to IIS-P, while Tatsuma Minamikawa, known for works like “Fire Force” and “Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry,” takes on the roles of director and scriptwriter at OLM.
Renowned artist Negi Haruba, the creator of “The Quintessential Quintuplets,” is responsible for the original character designs, which are skillfully adapted for animation by Kenji Ōta, recognized for his key animation work in “Pokémon XY.” The music for the series is crafted by a talented team, including Yūko Takahashi, Takuma Sogi, hisakuni, Rico Ohashi, Kanji Eguchi, and Shari.
Adding to the excitement, the opening theme song “Ponpopopon” is performed by none other than Kana Nakada, a former member of the Nogizaka46 idol group who has since become a professional mahjong player, featuring Pon no Michi All Stars.
Additionally, fans can immerse themselves further in the world of “Pon no Michi” with a manga adaptation by Tsukasa Unohana, which debuted in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine on September 1.
