No reprisal for Marin Miller in Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest of Courage anime

(Last Updated On: June 20, 2023)

Marin Miller, the voice actor known for their role as Izanami in “B: The Beginning,” revealed on Twitter this past Saturday that they will not be returning to voice Kage’s Mom in the English dub of “Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage” (Ōsama Ranking: Yūki no Takarabako) anime. Miller cited their refusal to take part in a contract that contained unlawful and unenforceable clauses, expressing concerns about potential job loss in the future.

In a separate tweet on June 14, Miller also made it clear that they will no longer collaborate directly with Crunchyroll, citing the company’s recent attempt to impose a contract with such unenforceable terms and their failure to provide adequate AI protections. Consequently, Miller announced their decision not to reprise any of their roles associated with Crunchyroll.

Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage debuted on April 13, with the English dub being made available for streaming on Crunchyroll starting April 27. The original Ranking of Kings anime first aired in October 2021 and spanned two consecutive cours. Funimation and Crunchyroll simulcasted the anime in Japan and also provided streaming options for the English dub.

Voice actress Laura Post recently took to Twitter to share her disappointment regarding the absence of reprisals from the English cast of the television anime adaptation in a mobile game based on the popular Korean creator SIU’s Tower of God manhwa. Post alleged that Crunchyroll, the co-producer of the 2020 anime series and known for its “Crunchyroll Original” programming in partnership with Naver Webtoon, hindered the actors from auditioning for the game’s roles.

According to Post, when the game developer approached a studio to begin recording the English localization, Crunchyroll directly intervened by asserting that they “owned the voice prints” of the original cast. Consequently, Post claimed that the game was legally prohibited from utilizing any of the original cast members, even in new or different character roles. She further clarified that Crunchyroll does not possess ownership of the voice prints and expressed her dismay at being effectively blacklisted from participating in the game’s production.
