On Wednesday, the esteemed stage production company, Style Office, made an exciting announcement. They revealed their plans to bring the captivating Backflip!! original television anime to life on stage. Scheduled to run from October 22 to 29 at Tokyo’s prestigious Nissho Hall, this theatrical adaptation is set to mesmerize audiences. Yū Murai, a skilled director and writer, will be at the helm, bringing his creative vision to the stage play.

The initial 12-episode TV anime debuted on Fuji TV’s Noitamina lineup in April 2021. Crunchyroll simulcasted the series during its Japanese broadcast.

The anime is based in Miyagi Prefecture and is part of the “Zutto Ōen Project 2011 + 10…” initiative, which aims to promote Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima. This project includes three anime projects: Misaki no Mayoiga, Hula Fulla Dance, and the anime set in Miyagi. Its purpose is to commemorate the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that occurred 12 years ago.
The anime takes place in Iwanuma City, located in Miyagi Prefecture, and revolves around a group of high school students participating in rhythmic gymnastics. Our protagonist, Shōtarō Futaba, becomes enthralled by the mesmerizing art after witnessing it during his final year of middle school. Motivated by this newfound passion, he eagerly joins the rhythmic gymnastics team at Sōshūkan High School, fondly referred to as “Ao High.” Along his journey, he forms a deep bond with his schoolmate Ryōya Misato, a renowned gymnast in their middle school days.
The anime was also accompanied by a film that premiered in Japan in July 2022. Crunchyroll distributed the film through its streaming platform.
