PVR Cinemas, a popular multiplex chain in India, has announced on Facebook that it will release Makoto Shinkai’s latest film, Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari), in the country. While a specific release date and locations have not yet been announced, fans are eagerly anticipating the film’s debut.
Suzume was a huge success upon its release in Japan, opening at number one on November 11th and selling 1.33 million tickets and earning 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days. This marks a 38.7% increase in ticket sales and a 47.4% increase in earnings compared to Shinkai’s previous film, your name., which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million) in its first three days. Suzume also saw a 14.8% increase in ticket sales and a 14.4% increase in earnings compared to Shinkai’s Weathering With You, making it the strongest opening of any of Shinkai’s films to date.
The film features the voice acting talents of Nanoka Hara as the heroine Suzume Iwato, and Hokuto Matsumura, a member of the SixTONES idol group, making his voice acting debut as Sōta Munakata, a young man who joins Suzume on a journey as the “Door-Closing Master.” Shinkai, known for his work on your name. and Weathering With You, both directed and wrote the screenplay for Suzume, with Masayoshi Tanaka handling character design and Kenichi Tsuchiya serving as animation director.
Takumi Tanji was the art director, and the film was produced by CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc. with distribution by TOHO. The film’s score was created by RADWIMPS, with additional scoring by Hollywood film composer Kazuma Jinnouchi, and TikTok performer Toaka performed one of the film’s theme songs, “Suzume.”
