Release for Kakegurui Live-action Film Sequel Pushed Back due to COVID-19

The official website for the live-action film Eiga Kakegurui: Zettai Zetsumei Russian Roulette (Kakegurui The Movie: Russian Roulette in Desperate Situation) announced on April 26 that it was decided to postpone its theatrical release in Japan to a future date. The second live-action film based on Homura Kawamoto (story) and Toru Naomura (art), the gambling-themed manga, Kakegurui, was originally scheduled to be released on April 29, 2021.

The website writes: “In light of the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus and the declaration of a state of emergency in four prefectures on April 23, we have decided to postpone the launch date. The sequel to the first live-action film Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler released in March 2019 tells an original story supervised by writer Kawamoto from the original manga. The director of the first film, Tsutomu Hanabusa (Sadako 3D, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!) Returns to the director’s chair, along with all the main cast members reprising their roles, and Ryusei Fujii (the member of the group from Johnny & Associates idol boys, Johnny’s West.) recently joined as Makuro Shikigami.

Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler is a Japanese manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Tōru Naomura. It began serialization in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker in March 2014, and its chapters were additionally compiled into fourteen tankōbon volumes as of February 2021. In North America, the manga has been licensed for release in English by Yen Press. . The series has also inspired numerous spinoff manga, including a prequel titled Kakegurui Twin.

The story of Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler takes place in Hyakkaou Private Academy, one of the most prestigious schools in Japan where, unlike normal schools, the hierarchy is determined by the game. The main protagonist is Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student whose beautiful and innocent facade hides a psychotic addiction to gambling and high-risk situations. With a keen intellect capable of breaking through the elaborate cheating methods used by the most powerful students to manipulate games in her favor, Yumeko threatens to destroy the school’s twisted hierarchy simply for the thrill of doing so.

A television anime adaptation of MAPPA aired in Japan from July to September 2017. A second season, titled Kakegurui × XVI, aired from January to March 2019. The anime series has been licensed and streamed by Netflix outside of Japan. . Square Enix released two light novels based on the manga in August 2017 and March 2019, respectively.
