With anticipation building up for the first part of the Sailor Moon Cosmos anime film duology, scheduled to premiere in Japanese cinemas this Friday, the official Sailor Moon YouTube channel has released a retrospective video. This video revisits the Dark Moon arc, prominently featured in the two-part Sailor Moon Eternal anime films, which form an integral part of the Sailor Moon Crystal anime franchise.

The director’s chair for both parts of Sailor Moon Cosmos will be occupied by Tomoya Takahashi, previously assistant director for Gatchaman Crowds. The screenplay is penned by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, known for his work on “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime”. Kazuko Tadano, who provided the character designs for the first and second seasons of Sailor Moon, will be reprising her role for these films.

Yasuharu Takanashi, who was behind the music production for Sailor Moon Crystal, is also returning for this project. Additionally, Yumiko Kuga from Studio Jack, who worked on “Deaimon: Recipe for Happiness”, will serve as the art director on the films.

The Sailor Moon Cosmos duology is based on the “final battle” from the original manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. This arc was previously adapted as the concluding arc of the original Sailor Moon anime titled “Sailor Moon Sailor Stars”. The first film of Cosmos is set to be released on June 9, while the second installment is scheduled to hit theaters on June 30.

Sailor Moon Cosmos follows the narrative from the Sailor Moon Eternal two-part film, which made its debut in Japan in early 2021, and subsequently premiered on Netflix on June 3 for a worldwide audience. The Eternal films continue the story of the Sailor Moon Crystal TV anime series.

Based on the legendary manga series by Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Moon Crystal depicts the journey of Sailor Moon in her quest to find her fellow Sailor Guardians and the Legendary Silver Crystal, with a mission to thwart the evil plans of Queen Beryl.
