The anime film “The First Slam Dunk” has taken the world by storm, becoming the fifth highest-grossing anime film globally over the weekend. Produced by Toei Animation, the film has also secured the 19th spot on the list of the highest-grossing films of all time in Japan.
Since its release on December 3, 2022, “The First Slam Dunk” has amassed an impressive gross income of 13.53 billion yen (approximately US$102.91 million), thanks in large part to its success in 10 territories across Asia, including China, South Korea, and Taiwan. In less than two weeks, the film grossed a whopping US$82.52 million in China alone.

The film has now surpassed “One Piece Film Red” to become the fifth highest-grossing anime film globally, with a total gross income of US$251.52 million. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as the film was released only in 2022, making it one of the most successful anime films of all time.
“The First Slam Dunk” is a spin-off from the original Slam Dunk TV anime, which aired from 1993 to 1996. The film follows the story of Ryota Miyagi, the point guard for Shohoku High School’s basketball team, as he and his teammates take on the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School, at the Inter-High School National Championship.
The film is set to be released in the UK, Ireland, and Malta this summer, with GKIDS handling the North American release. Fans of the original anime series can catch an on-demand replay of the TV anime on Crunchyroll.
