During the live-streamed “10th Anniversary Memorial Overlap Bunko All-Star Assemble Special” event, a teaser promotional video for the upcoming television anime adaptation of Yū Okano’s light novel series, “The Unwanted Undead Adventurer (Nozomanu Fushi no Bōkensha),” made its debut. This video not only unveiled the theme song artists but also confirmed the anime’s premiere in January 2024.
The teaser video provides a sneak peek at the series’ opening theme, “Immortal,” performed by the talented DJ, musical artist, and music producer known as JUVENILE. The ending theme, which will be revealed later, is sung by Mao Abe.
Helming the anime project is Noriaki Akitaya, known for directing acclaimed series such as “Bakuman” across all three seasons and “Slow Loop.” The scriptwriting is under the capable supervision of Yukie Sugawara, who previously worked on all four seasons of “Overlord.”
The anime stars:
- Mikako Komatsu as Lorrane Vivie
- Ikumi Hasegawa as Sheila Ibarss
- Ryōta Suzuki as Rentt Faina
- Sayumi Suzushiro as Rina Rupaage
Furthermore, character designs for the series are masterfully crafted by Takao Sano, recognized for contributions to “The Honor Student at Magic High School” and “Restaurant to Another World.”
The dark fantasy narrative, published in English by J-Novel Club in both its light novel and manga adaptations, follows the journey of Rentt Faina, a ten-year adventurer, known for battling monsters despite lacking exceptional talent. His routine mainly consists of hunting Slimes and Goblins for modest earnings. However, everything takes a dramatic turn when he stumbles upon an uncharted passage within the Labyrinth of the Moon’s Reflection.
At the end of this mysterious path, Rentt encounters not treasures or riches, but a legendary dragon that swallows him whole in an instant. Remarkably, Rentt awakens later, not entirely dead but far from alive—he’s reduced to a mere pile of bones! Armed solely with his trusty sword and tool belt, and adorned with a ghastly appearance, Rentt embarks on a new quest as a reborn Skeleton, aspiring to attain Existential Evolution and ultimately regain his human form, allowing him to return to civilization.
The question that looms large is whether Rentt can achieve his extraordinary transformation, or if the labyrinth will consume him for the duration of his peculiar existence.
Okano originally launched the series on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in 2016, with OVERLAP subsequently publishing the print version in October 2017, featuring illustrations by Jaian. Additionally, a manga adaptation by Haiji Nakasone commenced on OVERLAP’s Comic Gardo website in November 2017.
