All the things like ghosts, evil spirits, demons as well as mythological creatures fall under supernatural elements. All the great anime have supernatural themes. All the famous shounen are supernatural anime. However, this list does not have anime like Naruto, One Piece or Death Note, etc.
It is difficult to draw a list of the best supernatural anime but this list primarily focuses on the anime which are not only lesser-known but also great plots. Though some great anime are on this list too.
25) Soul Eater
Soul Eater Evans aims to become a Death Scythe with the help of his wielder, Maka Albarn. Soul Eater tells the story of the students of Shibusen and their missions to collect souls and protect the city from threats while working together. This anime is funny and full of supernatural elements and references.
24) Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan
Rikuo Nura is a half-youkai and half-human boy who grew up as the young master of the Nura Clan. Rikuo always treated the clan like family. According to folklore, they were considered evil creatures. He chose to live his life as a normal human being. But things did not go in his accord and he was forced to accept his youkai personality but his youkai personality only comes out at night. Rikuo must acknowledge his ancestry as the grandson of the legendary Nurarihyon and needs to prove himself to be worthy of being the next leader of the Nura Clan.
23) Beyond the Boundary
Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan that can use their blood as weapons. Mirai is tasked to hunt down “youmu” which are the creatures manifested from negative human emotions. One day, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of “youmu” in human form on a school roof. Mirai stabs her blood saber into him. But Akihito survives because he is immortal. From then on, the two form a rare kind of friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito. Akihito eventually manages to convince Mirai to join the Literary Club, where two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase were already members. The four form a group to fight against “youmu”. This short anime series has only one season and one movie. It is a supernatural-themed romantic anime with the background of the school.
22) Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul is one of the best anime in the supernatural genre. Fans always think that manga is better than anime. Flesh-eating “ghouls” are living with humans in Tokyo and the number of murders has also increased. Ken Kaneki, a college student always stays at home studying books but his life changes when he was attracted by the beauty of Rize Kamishiro. Ken comes out of his solitude to date her. That date night changes the fate of Ken and the plot starts to get intense from this point. The anime version has almost 4 seasons and the first season is the best part of this anime.
21) Kekkaishi
“Kekkaishi” are individuals with supernatural abilities which can destroy evil creatures called Ayakashi. The Ayakashi are demons that often wander around Yoshimura’s high school. Yoshimura Sumimura comes from a lineage of “Kekkaishi”. Yoshimura fights to protect his beloved school and hometown with the help of his childhood friend and neighbor, Tokine Yukimura. Though they are from rival clans, these two make an awesome team. This shounen anime has only one season and it is pretty fun to watch.

20) Another
New transfer student of class 3-3 of Yomiyama North Junior High, Kouichi Sakakibara makes his return after taking a sick leave for one month. Among his new classmates, his attention is drawn toward Mei Misaki—a reserved girl with an eyepatch. Kouichi saw Misaki in the hospital during his absence. But none of his classmates acknowledge her existence. Kouichi befriends Mei but it soon turns out to be a series of horrific and tragic events. This horror anime is full of supernatural elements.
19) Tokyo Ravens
Harutora, a member of the Tsuchimikado’s branch family, is unable to utilize the magic. Harutora made an old promise to protect Natsume, the heir of the Tsuchimikado’s main family and also Yakou’s supposed reincarnation, as her familiar. Harutora has no talent and chooses to live a normal life. But a prominent member of the Onmyou Agency attempts to create chaos by reviving a dead person. He decides to fight by Natsume’s side and is able to prevent that. Tokyo Ravens is a decent anime with romantic elements. This has magic and demons but this anime has only one season. The anime is an adaptation of a light novel of the same name. This anime had great potential but it is unlikely to have any more seasons.
18) Twin Star Exorcists
Benio Adashino and Rokuro Enmadou are two talented exorcists who are destined to become the “Twin Star Exorcists” and the prophesized parents of the Miko—the reincarnation of Abe no Seimei—who will cleanse the world of all impurities. As the story moves forward, more secrets are revealed. This romantic anime is full of supernatural elements.
17) The Law of Ueki
The Law of Ueki is a manga series written by Tsubasa Fukuchi. The story starts when Ai Mori thinks that her classmate, Kousuke Ueki, is an alien. Kousuke has the power to turn trash into trees and control them. This power was given to him by their teacher, a God Candidate involved in the Battle of the Supernatural Powers, a tournament to decide who will be the next god of Heaven. Each God Candidate among hundred others is required to choose a junior high school student to act as their fighter. It is a funny old-school type of anime.
16) Shonen Onmyoji
The protagonist of this anime Masahiro is the grandson of the great onmyouji, Abe no Seimei. However, he lost his sixth sense which helps enables an onmyouji to see supernatural beings. Thus, he is forced to choose a different career. But one day, a strange Mononoke named Mokkun appears. Mokkun shows Masahiro his true potential powers after fighting a demon. With the assistance of Mokkun, his quest of becoming the greatest onmyouji begins. This anime has romantic elements and is one of the lesser-known but good anime.
15) Blood Lad
The plot of Blood Lad is quite similar to Noragami’s plot. Staz Charlie Blood is a powerful vampire ruler of the Eastern district of Demon World. Rumors tell that he is a bloodthirsty and ruthless monster. But reality seems different as Staz is just an otaku obsessed with Japanese culture. He is not interested in human blood. When a Japanese girl named Fuyumi Yanagi accidentally enters the demon world through a portal, Staz becomes overjoyed. But in a comedic manner Fuyumi untimely dies. She turns into a wandering ghost. But Staz vows to resurrect her as this allows Stanz to travel to the human world. Blood Lad is an anime that is full of comedy and action.

14) Blue Exorcist
Rin Okumura is an ordinary but troublesome teenager. His reality turns upside down when he discovers that he and his twin brother are sons of Satan, the ruler of Gehenna. His demon father wishes for him to return to Gehenna. So, they can conquer Assiah together. Rin decides to defy his father and begins training to become an exorcist to defend Assiah alongside his brother Yukio. Blue Exorcist tells the story of Rin Okumura and his feeling of alienation from his classmates and society.
13) Noragami
Yato is seemed to be a minor deity who claims himself to be a “Delivery God”. He always dreams of having millions of followers without a single shrine dedicated to his name. However, his weapon partner is not convinced about Yato’s goals which are far from becoming a reality. Yato spends his days doing odd jobs for five yen. Yato’s fate changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident by taking the hit for him. Though she survives abnormally. She starts to believe in Yato’s words and starts helping him to achieve his goal. Is Yato the self-proclaimed “Delivery God”? As the plot moves forward, many dark secrets of Yato get revealed. Noragami is a supernatural-themed slice-of-life anime with lots of comedy and action.

12) Bleach
This anime needs no introduction to Indian fans. Ichigo Kurosaki, an ordinary high schooler learned his potential when he met a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki. Rukia got injured while protecting Ichigo’s family from the Hollows. Ichigo accepted Rukia’s offer by taking her sword and becoming a Soul Reaper to save his family. This shounen anime explores more about Ichigo’s journey to save Rukia from the strict soul society and his different quests in defeating the Hollows. This anime’s final arc will be aired this year and fans are eagerly waiting for this.

11) Kokoro Connect
Finding themselves without a suitable club, five students at Yamaboshi Academy band together to form the Student Cultural Society. These 5 club members are – Taichi Yaegashi, a hardcore wrestling fan; Iori Nagase, an indecisive optimist; Himeko Inaba, a calm computer genius; Yui Kiriyama, a petite karate practitioner; and Yoshifumi Aoki, the class clown. One day, Aoki and Yui experience a strange incident when, without warning, they switch bodies for a short period of time. As this supernatural phenomenon continues to occur randomly amongst the five friends, they begin to know everyone’s secrets as well. This anime should be a must-watch.
10) Durarara!!
Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district is home to a rumor of a headless “Black Rider”. The protagonist of this anime, Ryuugamine Mikado has always wished to live in the city. He is convinced to move to Tokyo by his friend. But Mikado, fortunately, witnesses the Black Rider on his first day in town. Durarara!! is an anime written with the intent of delivering several different stories at the same time, linking them all to a central figure or concept? Durarara!!’s signature concept is to link all the characters by delivering a great plot.

9) Hotarubi no Mori e.
A six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa was always intrigued by the tale of a mountain god. One day while visiting her uncle, Hotaru lost her way in the ancient forest. Gin, a masked forest spirit helps her to find a way and warns her never to return. But, she promises to come again with a gift. Hotaru paid no heed to his cautionary words and became close friends with Gin as she visits him every summer. 8) Natsume’s Book of Friends
Unlike other young boys, Takashi Natsume has been constantly chased by youkai to regain their freedom. Natsume’s deceased grandmother Reiko had left to him the “Book of Friends,” which contains the names of the spirits who obeyed her. The story of Natsume’s Book of Friends follows Natsume’s journey to free the youkai bound by his grandmother’s contract with a cat spirit named Madara as his bodyguard. This unique supernatural anime has fewer horror elements with more slice-of-life moments.
7) Inuyasha
Kagome Higurashi is a fifteen-year-old girl whose normal life gets disrupted when a demon drags her into a cursed well on the grounds of her family’s Shinto shrine. Kagome ends up 500 years in the past during Japan’s violent Sengoku period full of demons. Inuyasha anime tells the story of Kagome and a half-demon and half-human named Inuyasha, and their quest to fight against bigger threats. Nowadays, this anime is not mentioned as much.

Shinkai’s one of the legendary anime, Weathering with You is a fantastic story with flawless visuals that forces you to live in this fictional world. No one should miss this anime as once in a lifetime experience.
4) Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuuji comes to possess a real cursed item. From here he learns about Curses which are born from human negativity and malice. Yuuji swallows a finger and finds himself to be the ideal vessel of the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, the “King of Curses.” Jujutsu Kaisen was one of the best shows of 2020 and managed to please fans as well. This typical shonen anime is full of action with a great plot.

3) Your Name
Your name’s story revolves around Mitsuha and Taki’s actions, which begin to have a dramatic impact on each other’s lives. One day, Mitsuha awakens in Taki’s body in a village. Here plot begins with a magical journey and both of them are bound by fate. This anime is considered Shinkai’s masterpiece with worldwide fame.
2) Mushi-shi
“Mushi” which exists without any goals or purposes, is the most basic form of life in the world. The majority of humans are unaware of the existence of “Mushi” which lacks detailed information about them. This anime follows Ginko’s journey to uncover the secrets of the Mushi. Ginko tries to study these strange entities. This anime which is the winner of the 2006 Tokyo Anime Award, has some spectacular visuals with strong storytelling.
1) Demon Slayer
Tanjiro, after losing almost his entire family, tries to save his sister Nezuko to become a demon. But this path is full of hardships and sacrifice. Tanjiro becomes a member of the Demon Slayer Corps to hunt down the original demon who turned all the humans into demons. This anime is considered to be one of the greatest anime that has ever been created. It has some happy moments and some sad moments too. The artwork is unique too. This anime tells the story of Tanjirou’s experience to fight demons and his unconditional will to turn his sister human again.
