The Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- television anime special was initially announced at the Aniplex Online Fest 2022 last September. However, its proposed airing on December 31 was delayed due to production issues.

Notably, the cast list for the show features a mix of prominent Japanese and English voice actors. For the Japanese cast, the list includes Kana Hanazawa, Yūki Ono, Tomokazu Seki, Yū Kobayashi, Sumire Morohoshi, Aoi Koga, Wataru Hatano, Showtaro Morikubo, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Kenyuu Horiuchi, Tatsumaru Tachibana, Lynn, Maaya Uchida, Junya Enoki, Shunsuke Sakuya, and Daisuke Namikawa. Their English counterparts are Anjali Kunapaneni, Ben Balmaceda, David Vincent, Marin Miller, and others yet to be announced.

The special is directed by Shun Enokido (known for Fate/Grand Order commercials and Flip Flappers) and Takahito Sakazume (known for Fate/Grand Order commercials and Fate/Apocrypha), produced by A-1 Pictures. The script is penned by Daisuke Daitō, with character designs by Yūkei Yamada who also serves as the chief animation director. The music is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, whose vocal project SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Laco is contributing the theme song “FAKEit.”

Fate/strange Fake originated as an April Fool’s joke, dubbed the Fake/states night story, by Ryohgo Narita, the creator of Baccano! and Durarara!!, on April 1, 2008. Narita later expanded the story into a Fate/strange Fake supplement for the Type-Moon Ace Vol. 2 magazine and subsequently transformed it into a full-fledged light novel series in January 2015. The manga adaptation and the eighth volume of the light novel series were published by Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint in February, with illustrations by Shizuki Morii.
