Yamakawa’s Manga, Kuso Miso Technique, Gets Anime Adaptation through Successful Crowdfunding

(Last Updated On: June 1, 2023)

The official anime adaptation of Junichi Yamakawa’s Kuso Miso Technique manga, named Shin Yaranai ka, has successfully concluded its crowdfunding campaign on the Soreosu platform. The campaign generated 8,680,500 yen (roughly US$62,200), overshooting the original target of 8,000,000 yen (around US$57,300).

The narrative of Shin Yaranai ka revolves around Masaki Michishita, an ordinary prep school student who encounters a striking auto mechanic, Takakazu Abe, in a park. This chance meeting, sparked by Abe’s proposal, “Yaranai ka” (Shall we do it?), leads to their unique relationship. The anime intends to delve deeper into the manga’s story while weaving in elements from Yamakawa’s other works and original story components.

Pierre Itō from Studio Kingyoiro, recognized for works like Kenda Master Ken and World, Before You End, is helming the project as director. Ikansoku and Taiten Kawakami are credited for script and scenario respectively. Sumito Sasaki is leading as the animation director, while Yi Zhang, known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, is the character designer and chief animation director. Gekiatsu-kun will handle the chief animator role. Studio Leo and Anime Tokyo, LLC are the anime’s producers.

The anime will feature voice work from Yoshirō Sasaki as Takakazu Abe and a recent high school graduate, Sorate, as Masaki Michishita. Interestingly, Pierre Itō found the manga during his junior high school years on the Futaba Channel forum, and even made an unofficial live-action fan video under the pseudonym “Yoshirō Sasaki.”

Anime Tokyo is responsible for the medium-length, all-ages original video anime production. The animation process started in May, with dialogue recording planned for summer and the anime release scheduled for fall. The team aims to stream the Kuso Miso Technique segment on Niconico and YouTube by Christmas, following the online preview screening and delivery of rewards to backers in October or November.

Junichi Yamakawa originally released the Kuso Miso Technique manga in 1987 through the second issue of BaraComi, a special manga spinoff of the gay men’s magazine Barazoku. The dialogue line “Yaranai ka” from the manga gained significant online traction as an internet meme in the early 2000s.
